A moray eel shows its fangs to the photographer and appears to be defending its magnificently lush patch bedecked with gorgonian fans at Dayrell Island. However the toothy smile is not so much a display of aggression as a biological necessity—the moray lacks gill flaps and must open and close its mouth constantly to flush water over the gills.
