While the Tauranga Cup is a national championship—meaning any P Class sailor can enter—the Tanner Cup is an inter-provincial contest, with sailors selected proportionally to represent the provinces of New Zealand. Trials are held every year around the country to determine the entrants. In 2018, 23 boats contested the Tanner Cup, and 39 entered the Tauranga Cup, both of which were sailed off Kohimarama Beach in Auckland.
