Tarāpuka have adapted well to post-agricultural New Zealand, and gain much of their food from farmland, especially during the breeding season when they are tied to nearby riverbeds. The birds’ movements outside the breeding seasons are poorly understood, but it is thought they spend much of their time at sea. Like all gulls, they are adaptable opportunists and will go wherever the feeding is good.
