In the wet lab of research vessel Kaharoa, NIWA’s Richard O’Driscoll and Ben Lennard record the length, weight and spawning status of hoki they’ve caught. Hoki is New Zealand’s most valuable fishery and by far the most researched. Still, there’s pressure to keep costs down, says O’Driscoll.
