New Zealand Sea Lion 06.JPG
WHAT’S KILLING THE SEA-LIONS?
New Zealand sea-lion numbers have plummeted. Is it fishing pressure, climate change, the mysterious disappearance of octopuses, or a deadly new virus?
A female sea lion investigates the photographer’s camera. Sea-lions are remarkably fearless around humans and endlessly inquisitive, traits often misinterpreted as aggression. Sea-lion teeth have bands like tree rings, and recently, scientists at NIWA have been drilling into these, using sophisticated techniques to gather more information about how sea-lion diet has changed over the past 20 years.
Shot on assignment for New Zealand Geographic Issue138 March – April 2016.
