Hayley Nessia, a University of Auckland postdoctoral researcher, dons gloves to handle a Japanese mantis shrimp. Spearers can make a strike in a little over three milliseconds, but that’s slow-mo compared to the punch of a smasher, which is so fast it creates a thermal shockwave for extra devastation.
