A thin seam of sand—called a tombolo—connects larger land masses at the north and south of Great Mercury Island. To the east is picturesque Coralie Bay, dominated by the haystack-shaped island Motuwharangi (pictured). Sheep graze the tombolo, where the shearing sheds and shearers’ quarters are located. (The area was also the base of operations for the DOC’s 2014 pest eradication programme.) The stock have recently returned from a hiatus on the mainland, where they were seconded to avoid the aerial bait application.
Shot on assignment for New Zealand Geographic Issue 137 January - February 2016.
