Fisheries scientist Malcolm Francis holds the jaws of what he estimates would have been a 400 kilogram mako caught by a sports angler. Several hundred mako are caught by recreational fishers each year, but most are tagged and released. A deadlier impact comes from commercial tuna longlining, which kills thousands of mako a year as bycatch. Francis’s work on mako population ecology has highlighted the species’ vulnerability to harvest pressure and encouraged a more sustainable management approach.
