Nesting in large colonies allows black-billed gulls, or tarāpuka, to confuse and overwhelm aerial predators with sheer numbers, a behaviour known as predator swamping. Colonies, such as this one on Southland’s Oreti River, also provide protection for the chicks when their parents fly off to forage. Tarāpuka colonies are among the most densely packed of any gull species.
