Competitors prepare for the annual Woodchopping Carnival in Puhoi, a historic village north of Auckland. In 1863, 83 people from Staab, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) arrived on the banks of the Puhoi River. They became gum-gatherers, charcoal-burners, farmers and sawyers.
