Grant McGregor has lived all his life on the Aparima river in Southland, where he now runs his family’s gravel extraction business. For the last seven years he has worked closely with DOC and other local bodies to create a best-practice model for gravel extraction, leaving riverbeds in a healthy state for nesting birds. The hope is that techniques fine-tuned here will be adopted around New Zealand.
