SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALE 06.TIF
Whales feature prominently in the stories and myths of Māori voyaging, and migrating whales, especially humpback whales, are thought to have helped guide Polynesian explorers from the tropics to Aotearoa. But while humpback migration routes are fairly well understood, little is known about where southern right whales travel to outside of the breeding season.
