Tarāpuka chicks are highly vulnerable to predators and flooding, so they need to grow up fast. This chick will be capable of walking 24 hours after hatching, and a few days later, will leave the nest to congregate with other chicks. Parents returning from foraging trips summon their offspring with ‘mew calls’, individual to each bird, by which the chick recognises its parent amid the cacophony. Chicks are able to fly within a month.
