Ecologist Bruno David checks the water quality in Hamilton’s Bankwood stream, where scientists recently recorded the first known wild spawning site for giant kokopu. Migratory species come from the ocean, so even if local populations are reduced, new arrivals can soon bolster numbers. Non-migratory species, however, are at much greater risk from landscape modification and other threats.
