New Zealand sea lions, which once got all the food they needed from kelp forests, are now hunting further out, according to research led by the University of Otago’s Lucy Wing. That, of course, means swimming further, diving deeper and burning far more energy. The coastal marine ecosystem, it seems, is being forced out to sea for its survival.
