Tarāpuka are members of the masked gull family, which arose in the northern hemisphere around two million years ago, spreading into South America, then Africa, Australia and finally New Zealand. They are closely related to tarapunga, the red-billed gull, and can hybridise with them, but the two species exhibit markedly different behaviours.
