Tuna spotter plane pilots report spine-tailed devil rays are one of the most abundant of the ocean megafauna seen offshore during summer. Erdmann has not yet managed to tag any, but a few years ago, three devil rays caught in skipjack tuna purse seine nets were tagged and released by NIWA scientists. One remained in New Zealand waters, while the other two migrated to Fiji and Vanuatu.
