HUTTON’S SHEARWATER 06.JPG
An 'insurance colony' of Hutton's was built on private land at the end of Kaikoura Peninsula in 2005 to safeguard against disaster at the mountain colonies, which are located on unstable ground. The artificial colony was named Te Rae Atiu and 496 chicks were translocated to it over many seasons. Lindsay Rowe checks in on the colony every week after the birds return.
