Kellian works in the Snapper 1 fishery, which stretches from the east coast of Northland past the Hauraki Gulf to the Bay of Plenty. Last year, the amount of snapper that could be caught in Snapper 1 was 8050 tonnes. Of that, 3050 tonnes was set aside for recreational fishing, 50 for Maori customary take and 450 to account for fish killed by discarding or stolen by poachers. The remaining 4500 tonnes is the total commercial catch.
