FAIRY TERN 13b
During the summer breeding season, fairy terns spread out to breed at Waipu, Mangawhai, Te Arai, Pakiri and the Papakanui Spit. In addition to a breeding site, each pair has its own defended feeding territory where they hunt for food, foraging in estuaries and close to shore. Over the winter, the birds swap from the east coast to the west, gathering together on the Kaipara Harbour.
