Waikaremoana Wreck 1869.
In the dark and eerie waters of Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Urewera National Park lies a skeleton of a wreck built for war.
In 1869 nearing the end of the New Zealand Wars, the Armed Constabulary sent a force to Lake Waikaremoana in an attempt to quash the Hauhau rebellion led by the Maori chef Te Kooti.
Two whale boats were built to launch an attack by water, but by the
time they were constructed Te Kooti had fled. To prevent them
falling into Maori hands they were scuttled with rocks where the
slowly decaying remains of one lies today.
