Long-finned pilot whales are an integral part of New Zealand’s coastal waters, but in the North Island they tend to be seen 10 kilometres or more offshore where water temperatures are around 20ºC. They feed at night, and during the day they rest, travelling slowly and socialising in pods of about 30 individuals. Many pods may travel in close proximity, forming loosely connected “super-pods” of up to 1000 animals.
